Cyber security is always a hot topic but currently it’s more so than ever so what lessons can be learnt in the enterprise apps world? Bogdan Necula, cybercrime intelligence analyst at the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), presented at Enterprise Apps World last month. We asked him for his app security tips.

What are your top three tips for building security into your app?

1) Let the app protect the user from a security perspective
2) Maintain a proper balance between what data is needed and how much is asked
3) Leave as little as possible on the device side

How can businesses best protect their enterprise apps environment?

“I guess to keep up with the developments in the mobile technology and implement as many secure features as possible but more importantly is to expect the unexpected.”

How do you get the correct balance between security and business functionality and ease of use?

“Probably one of the most difficult tasks to achieve but in my opinion it all depends on the priorities of each business and the usage of that particular app. For example if the type of data exchanged through that particular app has a lower risk of damage if exposed then the users might be allowed a more flexible environment. If it’s the opposite than I believe security should be considered top priority and learning from the recent security incidents I believe that developers should be pretty objective about the restraints imposed by particular apps.”

What’s the biggest risk the enterprise apps arena faces currently?

“Probably the biggest risk is related to the rapid pace at which development takes place. Obviously the customers’ demands forces the business sector to provide new products in a very short time and by doing that we might experience the same problems that the desktop world had regarding security. Other risks are of course related to the relationship user – app and all the data that is associated with that.”

Bogdan Necula, cybercrime intelligence analyst at the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), presented at Enterprise Apps World 17-18 June at London’s Olympia National. Security will also be a key feature of Apps World Europe at London’s Excel 12-13 November. Until 1st August tickets are available at a super early bird discount of at least £300 off a platinum or gold pass and at least £200 off a workshop pass. Book here.
