Microsoft has released a free new font called Cascadia which has been designed to be aesthetically-pleasing for coders.

With Microsoft debuting its new Windows Terminal command-line experience during the company’s Build conference this year, Redmond decided that developers should also be treated to a new font.

In a blog post, Microsoft program manager Kayla Cinnamon wrote:

“It is the latest monospaced font shipped from Microsoft and provides a fresh experience for command-line experiences and code editors.

Cascadia Code was developed hand-in-hand with the new Windows Terminal application.”

While it was created with the new Windows Terminal in mind, the font is also designed to be used with other apps and IDEs such as Visual Studio.

Here’s an example of the font in action:

Cascadia gets its name from the codename for Windows Terminal prior to release. Microsoft added ‘Code’ to the end just to, y’know, make clear it’s designed for developers.

Because the new font is intended for developers, it has support for ligatures which helps to make code more readable and user-friendly for some people.

“Programming ligatures are most useful when writing code, as they create new glyphs by combining characters,” Cinnamon adds. “This helps make code more readable and user-friendly for some people.”

You can grab Cascadia Code from its GitHub repo here, or it will be available in the next version of Windows Terminal.
