LiveCode was reviewed in the Times Education Supplement last Friday. This, just days after being shortlisted for a BETT Award, clearly reflects the emphasis we are putting into our education products and highlights the potential of LiveCode as a teaching tool.
“Complex programming languages have turned pupils off computing studies, but a user-friendly option could breathe new life into this vital area for creativity” Douglas Bane of the TES says in his article. He goes to explain how computer studies at school are teaching how to use Microsoft Office only. Or, if they are teaching programming, they are using out of date langauges like Comal or Visual Basic. He tells us that students are getting frustrated and bored and that teachers are feeling the stress. What can be done to rescue ICT curriculum?
“LiveCode is the answer” says Gracemount HighSchool teacher Steven Whyte. “It’s simple and appealing. There’s no jargon and it’s highly portable,” says Mr Whyte. “If pupils are using a Mac in school, they can email their work to a PC at home and continue working there.”
LiveCode is more than just desktop though – most students these days have a smartphone. “Designing and programmning games and apps for those will give students a real buzz” says Steven Whyte.
