Google has launched Google Play seller support in India, added the world’s second most populous country to the list of regions where paid Android apps can be sold.

The news was announced in a post on the Android Developers Blog, with various reasons given for the development.

Extending to the Indian market is really a no-brainer for Google, as the blog post explains. India is now in the top five global markets for app downloads, and is of course in the BRIC [Brazil, Russia, India, China] group for new, powerful markets.

Even though it may be argued China is even racing ahead of these emerging economies in terms of development, recent research from Flurry Analytics revealed that India had the tenth fastest growing global Android and iOS market. China, predictably, was well clear at the top.

This could be due to another statistic: Indian Android users have also downloaded more apps in the past six months than in the last three years combined.

Indian app developers can get started on monetisation straight away, by setting up a Google Checkout Merchant account and “take advantage of all the tools offered by Google Play to monetise their products in the best way for their businesses”, as the blog post author Ibrahim Elbouchikhi notes.

Elsewhere, there’s also good news for buyers, as Google is also now supporting Rupees as an accepted transactional currency.

However, the news hasn’t gone down entirely smoothly for one key reason: Google had, back in September, allowed India onto the paid app list for 24 hours before taking it off again with no explanation offered.

Pluggd.In, an Indian technology start-up site, reported on September 22 with the headline “India based Android developers can now sell paid apps in the Play store”, only to report on September 25 with the headline “Indian app developers CANNOT sell paid apps in the Play app store”.
