Uber has joined the Linux Foundation as a gold member, firming up a long-standing commitment to open source technologies.
The ridesharing firm, which is working on more than 300 open source projects, said it was looking forward to collaborate with other open source leaders to solve problems and further promote open source adoption globally.
One of the hallmark technologies Uber contributed to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), also run by the Linux Foundation, was Jaeger. Jaeger provides an end-to-end system to troubleshoot transactions in complex distributed systems. Another, Horovod, is an open source framework focused on training deep learning models.
“Open source technology is the backbone of many of Uber’s core services and as we continue to mature, these solutions will become ever more important,” said Thuan Pham, Uber CTO in a statement. “The Linux Foundation not only provides homes to many significant open source projects, but also creates an open environment for companies like Uber to work together on developing these technologies.
“We are honoured to join the Linux Foundation to foster greater collaboration with the open source community,” added Pham.
“Uber has been active in open source for years, creating popular projects like Jaeger and Horovod that help businesses build technology at scale,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. “We are very excited to welcome Uber to the Linux Foundation community.
“Their expertise will be instrumental for our projects as we continue to advance open solutions for cloud-native technologies, deep learning, data visualisation and other technologies that are critical to businesses today.”
