Most distributed caches force a choice: serialise everything as blobs and pull more data than you need or map your data into a fixed set of cached data types. This video shows how ScaleOut Active Cachingā„¢ takes a different approach by deploying your own data structures written in C# or Java directly into the cache. This new approach streamlines cache access and accelerates processing.

The video explains how ScaleOut Active Caching lets developers create and deploy two types of modules. You’ll see custom API modules that create client APIs to fetch or update only the data needed from cached objects instead of retrieving or updating entire objects. “Message modules” connect to messaging hubs like Kafka to receive and send messages while accessing cached objects. They avoid the need to access persistent data stores when processing messages.

Beyond accelerating application performance, running modules in the distributed cache also reduces network traffic. It scales client workloads by offloading processing to cache servers. Modules also improve maintainability by treating cached objects as object-oriented data instead of uninterpreted blobs.

In the video you will see real-world e-commerce and airline applications that demonstrate how API and message modules work in practice to boost performance and maintainability. As these examples illustrate, active caching modules transform distributed caching from a passive data store into a powerful, in-memory computing platform.
