Broadcasting giant Sky has launched its own developer ‘academy’ to research development of mobile and web apps.

The company is looking for software developers who are getting started in their career, to start work in September. Training will combine technical skills development with hands-on work around a number of projects across the business.

“For anyone looking to embark on a career in this industry it’s a great opportunity to access on the job training and a chance to work on some of the cutting edge projects that we have underway,” said Paul Cutter, the broadcaster’s software engineering director.

Sky’s apps are amongst the most popular free apps available – to date the Sky News and Sky Sports Football Score apps have been downloaded by more than 5 million mobile users between them. A new Sky+ app for iPad users was launched last month and aims to match the success of the Sky+ iPhone app which has been downloaded by 1.7 million people.

Websites from the company, also attract almost 10 million unique users each month.

Applicants have until 19 June to apply for one of the positions. The new recruits, based at the company’s offices in Osterley, Greater London, will be focused on developing new apps, websites and interactive and mobile services.
