IDC predicts that Android is set for significant growth in 2024, outpacing Apple’s iOS by a considerable margin. Amid shifting market dynamics, Android is expected to expand at “twice the pace” of iOS.

The iPhone has always performed strongly in the US but its growth internationally has contributed to Android’s squeezed marketshare in recent years, despite Android maintaining a majority on a global scale. Nonetheless, IDC’s latest projections indicate a robust rebound for Android, expected to be catalysed by recent market developments.

IDC’s research director, Nabila Popal, highlighted the anticipated growth trajectory for Android in a conversation with CNN, stating: “This year, we are expecting Android to grow at twice the pace of iOS.”

This forecast follows a downturn for Apple, which saw a 10 percent decrease in sales during Q1 2024, allowing Samsung to reclaim its leading position. This was largely attributed to diminishing sales in China.

Apple outperformed Samsung in December which ended Samsung’s 12-year streak with a 20 percent marketshare. Samsung has now secured approximately 20.8 percent of marketshare with 60.1 million shipments during the first quarter, compared to Apple’s 17.3 percent with 50.1 million shipments. Additionally, Xiaomi remains a key player with a 14.1 percent marketshare based on 40.8 million shipments.

IDC’s comprehensive analysis reveals a 7.8 percent increase in global smartphone shipments year over year, totaling around 289 million devices for the first quarter of 2024. This resurgence signals a robust recovery for the smartphone market, bouncing back from two years marred by macroeconomic challenges.

Meanwhile, Apple grapples with regulatory challenges in the US, where the Department of Justice has lodged a lawsuit against the tech giant. The lawsuit criticises Apple’s alleged monopolistic practices, specifically targeting the company’s handling of messaging services and the App Store.
