The team behind popular lightweight open-source IDE Geany has announced its latest release with numerous enhancements for developers.

This latest iteration incorporates most additional Geany themes directly into the core package, eliminating the need for separate downloads. Only themes with incompatible licences remain excluded from the distribution.

The update features a number of technical improvements under the hood, including an upgrade to Scintilla 5.5.4 and Lexilla 5.4.2, alongside an update to Universal Ctags p6.1.20240519.0. The developers have also raised the minimum GLib requirement to version 2.56.

One of the more notable enhancements addresses user productivity through expanded search capabilities. “Add support for searching the Messages and Compiler output,” the release notes highlight, allowing developers to more efficiently navigate through diagnostic information.

The text editor now also supports modern platform-native file dialogues, providing a more integrated experience with the host operating system. Windows users will specifically benefit from themed title bars.

Geany’s latest update introduces practical workflow enhancements including a quick filter for the open documents sidebar and keybindings preferences. Multi-caret editing sees improvements with support for pasting and autocompletion across multiple carets simultaneously.

For users of the SaveActions plugin, the update adds support for “persistent untitled documents”.

Language support has expanded with updated filetypes for numerous programming languages including Erlang, Forth, Fortran, Groovy, Java, JavaScript, Nim, Ocaml, Meson, Pascal, PowerShell, R, Shell, and Verilog. New language support has been added for CIL, Dart, Dockerfile, LESS and SCSS, Nix, Prolog, Raku, SystemVerilog, Terraform HCL, TOML, and Zig.

Geany’s localisation receives attention with updated translations for Czech, Danish, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, and Traditional Chinese. New translations for Latgalian and Tamil have also been added.

Users should be aware of a potential interface issue on some systems where icons might appear excessively large, consuming significant screen space. This problem stems from an issue in the Adwaita icon theme version 43. The developers recommend updating the Adwaita icon theme, installing its Legacy variant, or switching to an alternative theme.

Beginning with this release, Windows users will soon benefit from digitally signed installers through SignPath.io, enhancing security by enabling proper verification on their systems. This signed installer will be available within days of the initial release, though an unsigned variant containing the identical build is available immediately.
