Apple is gearing up for its next big leap into the world of spatial computing with the introduction of the Vision Pro. Developers eagerly awaiting their opportunity to prepare apps for the device will be able to apply for dev kits.
Vision Pro is Apple’s first leap into spatial computing. However, without access to the hardware, developers face significant challenges in building and testing their applications for the platform.
While specific details about the developer kit remain scarce, Apple has a history of providing developers with essential tools during major transitions.
In 2020, when Apple embarked on its transition to Apple Silicon, developers were granted access to a Developer Transition Kit, housed within a Mac mini case. This enabled them to adapt their software to the new architecture and ensure compatibility.
“Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.
“Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before — with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of groundbreaking innovations. It unlocks incredible experiences for our users and exciting new opportunities for our developers.”
Apple’s developer website hints at the imminent appearance of applications for the Apple Vision Pro developer kit, possibly as early as July.
Although the exact specifications and features of the kit are yet to be disclosed, it is expected to provide developers with the necessary resources and tools to begin creating and refining their spatial computing applications.
Apple is also taking additional measures to support developers in this endeavour. Developers will have the opportunity to request an Apple Vision Pro compatibility evaluation, ensuring that their apps seamlessly integrate with the new platform.
Moreover, Apple is establishing developer labs in key locations worldwide, including Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. These labs will offer in-person instruction and foster a collaborative environment where developers can receive guidance and feedback from Apple’s experts.
While developers await the availability of the Apple Vision Pro developer kit, it is worth noting that the actual headset won’t be available for purchase until early 2024. The headset’s $3,499 pricing means it’s unlikely to reach many users for quite some time.
