Our favourite online bookstore (they still do books, right?) has expanded its popular Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform to include a unified alerts system for their Simple Notification Service.
Providing the ability to send push notifications to multiple devices simultaneously – even cross platform on; Android, iOS, and Kindle Fire hardware. This latest update is available to all current AWS customers at no extra cost.
Starting at this level contains support for handling up to one million notifications per month, thereafter it’s an extra dollar to deliver a further one million push notifications.
Raju Gulabani, Vice President of Database Services, AWS says: “Many customers tell us they build and maintain their own mobile push services, even though they find this approach expensive, complex and error-prone,”
He continues: “Amazon SNS with Mobile Push takes these concerns off the table with one simple cross-platform API, a flat low price and a free tier that means many customers won’t pay anything until their applications achieve scale.”
Many consumers have multiple types of devices; for example, myself – I’m an Android guy on mobile, an iPad chap on tablet, and a Windows fellow on PC. Delivering notifications to this myriad of devices used to be a difficult task – whilst other services are available – many prefer to use AWS.
One of these customers is Urban Airship. The company’s CEO, Scott Kveton, had this to say in the press release: “Leveraging AWS allows us to continue to focus on delivering great mobile experiences. The raw transmission of push notifications is itself a heavy workload – AWS has proven it can handle huge-scale workloads.”
Hopefully Amazon’s AWS has moved on and upwards since their biggest region, US-east, had a complete region failure back in June 2012, in March 2012, and also in April 2011; which was aptly-named the ”cloudpocalypse”.
What do you think about this latest addition to Amazon’s powerful AWS arsenal?
