It’s official: Flash is no longer available from Google Play’s storefront.

AppsTech reported this story back in June with the main focus centring on a lack of Flash for Jelly Bean, Android 4.1, saying at the time that IT professionals will be “doubtless breathing sighs of relief”.

Adobe confirmed that usesr who already have Flash installed will get to keep it if they so choose, with configuration settings updated to reflect this.

The August 15 date Adobe spoke of has been and gone, and now Flash is no more on Play. But will you miss it?

Had he lived to see it, Steve Jobs probably wouldn’t have missed it.

Given Apple and Adobe’s long professional relationship, Jobs pointed out in a famous open letter entitled ‘Thoughts on Flash’ that Apple’s decision to disallow any Adobe integration on iDevices was for reasons of technology, not business.

But then again, Apple and Adobe never did get along. Adobe developer evangelist Lee Brimelow proclaimed to Cupertino’s finest: “go screw yourself”, with Adobe at pains to note that those views weren’t the official company line.

Jobs noted, back in April 2010: “The mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short”.

Talking of open web standards, HTML5 is going to be Flash’s successor on Android, with the company stating that it is “the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms”.

Adobe had announced back in November last year that efforts with Flash will be focused on PC browsing and mobile apps with Adobe AIR.

Archive versions of the Flash plug-in will still be available for developers, as well as critical bug fixes remaining available for existing versions on Android until September 13 next year.
