It’s another WWDC 2013 editorial, but as we head full-throttle towards another Apple WWDC, the stakes are high and expectations are truly bigger than ever, although I feel I’ve been quoted as saying this for years.

The biggest changes are expected around the upcoming release of iOS 7; which even the majority of “fanboys” (a term I’ve come to detest) will admit has slacked in both design and features.

Xbox One - Internet of Things gains consumer player

It turns out the rumours of Microsoft’s Xbox One were true; the upcoming iteration of the console will require access to the internet once every 24 hours.

Whilst this sucks, and it truly does for anyone with limited or no connection availability, it marks the push forward for a new generation of internet-connected devices... the “Internet of Things”.

Jelly Bean jumps as Google Play set to surpass iOS app downloads

Google has updated its “Android landscape” survey on the Developer Dashboard, showing Jelly Bean is very close to overtaking Gingerbread as the most widespread release. This may be just in time, as Google’s Play Store is set to surpass iOS app downloads.

Currently, Gingerbread, or 2.3, is sitting at the top spot at 36.5% of install base. The latest version of the OS, Jelly Bean, is now at 33%.

Could this be Apple’s answer to Google Now?

At the D11 interview last week, Tim Cook let slip Apple has acquired nine start-ups since October. Mike Elgan, from Cult of Mac, believes one of these could be ‘Grokr’ a predictive search app for iOS.

Much like Siri was before being implemented natively in iOS5, Grokr has been pulled from the AppStore.

Also lending credence to the theory, the website currently list their upcoming project as 'NEXT'.

Keen observers may notice this is the same name as Apple's most famous acquisition.

ARM’s Cortex CPU and Mali GPU architectures for 2014

If you’re into mobile devices, it’s hard to ignore ARM, who supplies and maintain architectures for most mobile SoC (System on a Chip) makers.

The company has released details on its new, mid-range Cortex CPU and Mali GPU architectures for 2014 at Computex, Taipei.

 

The Cambridge-based firm hit Taiwan to showcase their latest and (mid) greatest; the Cortex-A12, and Mali- T622.

Windows 8.1 officially unveiled – the Start Button is back
