Choosing your app’s title and icon: The do’s and don’ts

After spending months (or even years) programming an application, you may think that finally choosing a title for your app and slapping on an icon will be the easiest part of the process. But, choosing an effective title and icon is a deceptively simple process. Occasionally, you or a member of your team will be inspired and come up with the best name or icon design on the market. Most times, this is not the case.

Below are do’s and don’ts to help you narrow down your list of potential titles and help your app’s icon stand out.

Title:

DO: Try to limit your title to about two dozen (24) characters. This will make the title look better when viewed in search results

DON’T: Use any special characters. Including any character that isn’t a number or a letter will throw off SEO results and make it difficult for users to pronounce your title.

DO: Check thoroughly to make sure your title isn’t already being used. Spend time searching through the app store now and avoid having to waste time on copyright lawyers in the future.

DON’T: Choose a name that too closely resembles the name of a popular app on the market. Users will think you are trying to cash in on someone else’s success

DO: Choose a title that is simple, easy to pronounce, and easy to spell. Using repeating letters or sounds will make your title more memorable. Think “Candy Crush” or “Clash of Clans”

DON’T: Be too whimsical with your title. The user should be able to get a general idea of your app’s content from your title.

Icon:

DO: Keep it simple. There is only so much space to fill up, so adding too many elements will look messy quickly.

DON’T: Use any text. This is what the app title is for, use the icon to give the users a preview of your app’s design.

DO: Transfer elements of your app’s color palette into your app’s icon, but limit yourself to using only 2 or 3 colors

DON’T: Use a photo. A scaled-down photo won’t transfer well into a small icon, and it will stand out (in a bad way) from the other computer-designed graphics in the app store.

DO: Test the look of your icon on a variety of background colors and textures. Every user personalizes their phones, and you want to make sure your color palette doesn’t clash with most other colors.

DON’T: Completely copy the UI elements from the OS. Follow their design tips, but make sure you set your app apart from the default icons.
