Intel Capital has announced a $100m fund to invest in companies that create apps and software tools in its online Intel AppUp Centre store.

The fund provides us with a great opportunity to continue innovating, whilst also engaging with some of the most promising companies

Intel aims to help companies produce apps, infrastructure and digital content for different connected devices that run on the MeeGo operating system. This was announced at Intel Capital’s Global Summit on Monday. Focused on improving computer innovations across various devices and technology, the investment's key areas include HTML5 and experiences for Ultrabooks.

Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and Intel executive VP, said: “The Intel Capital AppUp Fund will help encourage the creation of companies interested in delivering or enabling applications that enhance and extend the online experience for the 15 billion devices expected to be connected by 2015.”

US mobile marketing company, Urban Airship, and German-based software firm, 4tiitoo, are the first to receive investments from Intel, with 10 more companies based in Asia, totalling $45m. It was announced that the Asian companies would receive $40m in funding.

Renée James, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Software and Services Group, said: “The fund provides us with a great opportunity to continue innovating, whilst also engaging with some of the most promising companies to help drive future software technology.”
