Free developer sessions @ #AppsWorld Africa

Apps World Africa kicks off in Cape Town in less than a week, packed full of apps-related advice and insight across a multitude of issues.

The Apps World Africa Develop Track is free to attend, and will feature the likes of Google Android, Microsoft, Nokia WIPjam, Blackberry, Facebook and Apple iOS; delivering first class developer workshops over the two days of the show.

Here’s a rundown on what you can expect from the Apps World developer track: 

Dirk le Roux, Afrozaar’s top Architecture Consultant will be leading this hands on developer session. He’ll be leading developers through a live-build process of a demo Android app, from conception to its upload to the android market. Covering some key aspects of working with Android, from beginner basics and understanding the SDK, to introducing a range of partners and their developer guides.
This session will cover:

The android framework and API
Development and debugging tools
Preparing for application deployment
Preferred technique for writing applications that perform efficiently
Troubleshooting apps
Implementation advice
Improving App performance & user experience
Addressing security concerns

Blackberry developers’ workshop


Hosted by RIM’s senior app development consultant in South Africa Michael Weitzel, this session will provide the technical knowhow that developers require to begin developing apps for the BlackBerry platform across both web and Java.The session will also look at the raft of tools provided to the BlackBerry developer community and examine how to get started to develop apps. Michael will also talk about the future of developing apps on the BlackBerry platform, for the much anticipated BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet, and beyond!

Nokia presents WIPjam

This free-to-attend, mammoth developer workshop, brought to us by Nokia and WIP, will cover a myriad of issues around developing apps. With a series of sessions hosted by Thibaut Rouffineau, VP of developer partnerships at the Wireless Industry Partnership, developers will learn about various tricks and techniques from an assembled team of industry experts.

Sessions, discussions and “Un-Panels” will include:

Developer stories of adventure and enlightenment
The death of featurephones
The rise and frag of smartphones
Making money from mobile
Mobile for good
Mobile money

The iOS Workshop

Apple’s iOS remains one of the most popular developer platforms around. Herman Lintvelt, the founder and director of Polymorph Systems will present a session demonstrating how to utilise DSL (Domain Specific Language) to build a mobile app for both iPhone and Android.

Using , Applause Framework, iOS SDK and Android SDK, this workshop will include:

An overview of DSL and XText
Introducing the Applause Framework
Building a mobile app for iPhone and Android using a DSL

Microsoft Developer Session
Windows Phone Development Platform Overview

Dave Russell, Sr. Business Strategy Consultant at Microsoft will take developers through an introduction to Windows Phone 7 Development. This is a whirlwind tour of the platform, what it has to offer, and how it works. We also look at what tools are provided for developers to create rich, exciting and engaging experiences for the mobile market and how they work. A developer focused session for those who wish to get a technical view of what it takes to write applications for the Windows Phone 7 operating system.

The Facebook Developer Garage
Reviving the South Africa Facebook Developers Garage, the founders of the Cape Town & Johannesburg branches, Joey da Silva and Armand du Plessis, present a two hour workshop.

Accompanied by industry experts from Realmdigital and Fontera, Joey and Armand will continue the Facebook tradition of encouraging a grassroots effort to involve the local developer community to teach and inspire one another: the workshop will look at how the platform is evolving, and providing a place to explore, get gritty, tinker, collaborate, and test out ideas for building with the Facebook Platform.
