Yahoo and Google to launch digital newsstands

Yahoo and Google are set join an already crowded marketplace after reports revealed that the internet giants plan to unveil digital newsstand apps next week.

According to All Things D, this coming Wednesday Yahoo will officially launch Livestand - its home grown digital news app following a preview earlier this year.

Following behind, Google is planning to launch its product, code-named Propeller. According to reports, the name could change to Currents but it is planned for launch the week after next.

Android developers significantly more productive than Apple’s

Android pips Apple to top of the apps

Apple has been ousted as the app download king thanks to the surge in popularity of Android handsets, according to reports.

App downloads on Google's Android operating system have overtaken those on Apple's devices after ABI Research found that Apple iOS made up 31 per cent of total app downloads in the second quarter of this year, while Android apps accounted for an impressive 44 per cent.

Google VoIP is pulled from iPhone App Store

Google’s VoIP app has been removed from the iPhone App Store after reports of crashing within the new version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 5.

According to reports, the reason for the crashes, as well as which smartphones and operating systems are more prone to problems, is still unclear.

Should app developers choose Android over Apple?

Developers are taking notice to the increasing number of Android app downloads, which could soon overtake Apple’s iOS system.

Both platforms will hold around 3.2bn downloads by June 2012, according to a report by download tracker Xyologic.

Apple are currently still in the lead to Android, with 1.45 billion downloads compared to Android’s 640 million last month.

Android users spend more time in apps than browser

It seems Android app usage is really taking off with it’s users. It was thought iPhone users were the main hogger of app time but it seems their competitor is becoming more savvy.

A study from Nielsen shows that Android users spend about an hour a day using their phone for everything but talking – 56 minutes, to be exact. Of those minutes, 67% are spent in apps while 33% are spent inside the mobile’s web browser.

Steve Jobs dies, aged 56

Steve Jobs has died at the age of 56, following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

Tributes have been pouring in for the Apple co-founder and visionary with President Barack Obama stating that Jobs was the embodiment of the American dream. Having announced his resignation on August 24, 2011, Jobs maintained a presence as chair of the Apple board, however, it appeared to signify the beginning of the end.
