Play Store expands paid apps support to six more countries

Only developers in a select number of countries have the ability to sell their apps on the Play Store, but that list has now expanded by a further six.

Here are the new additions:

  • Albania

  • Algeria

  • Armenia

  • Namibia

  • Nicaragua

  • Trinidad and Tobago

Back in April, Google enabled support for Tunisia and Zimbabwe.

Many of our readers are not based in these countries and so most are likely unaware there are countries where developers can release free apps on the Play Store but cannot monetise with paid apps or in-app purchases.

That unfortunate list, thankfully, is slowly getting smaller.

Apple shutters affiliate commissions for apps in the App Store

Effective as of October 1st, Apple will no longer provide affiliate commissions for referrals to apps on its App Store.

The move is of particular concern to publishers who focus on game and app reviews for iOS and Mac. While the commission Apple provides is only around 2.5 percent, a small percentage of the company’s revenue, they are of large importance to such websites.

Apps in the Microsoft Store are blocked from downloading content

Developers are finding their apps in the Microsoft Store are being prevented from downloading external content such as images and videos.

Supreme Court will hear Apple’s case in App Store monopoly lawsuit

The US Supreme Court will hear Apple’s appeal in a class action lawsuit alleging the company is abusing its position to charge developers high fees.

Apple takes a 30 percent cut of developers’ app sales on the iOS App Store. This is pretty industry-standard across most of the major app/game stores, including the Play Store and Steam.

Apple removes location leaking apps ahead of GDPR deadline

This week Apple has started outright removing iOS apps that don't comply with their location privacy standards. After tacitly permitting these apps for months, Apple has begun delisting leaky iOS apps and sending emails to app developers who have fallen afoul of the rules.

Microsoft slashes its app revenue cut to five percent

Microsoft is aware software on its app store is often not as profitable as those on rivals, but today it’s helping developers out by slashing its own cut of the revenue.

NHS wants more developers to submit their health apps to its library

The UK’s health service is making a renewed call for developers to submit their health apps for inclusion in the NHS Apps Library

It’s been a rocky road for the NHS Apps Library. The library first launched back in 2013, was closed in 2015, and then re-launched in 2017.  For it to survive, it will need to meet its goal of becoming the “go-to place” for “safe and effective digital tools”.
