Why user retention is still the biggest struggle for app developers

Of the over 3 million apps available on the App Store and Google Play, a very small number are actually download and opened by users. Of that small number of apps, an even smaller number become an indispensable part of the user’s day-to-day activities. A new study from Localytics finds that one in four mobile users open an app only once.

A beta program is being rolled-out by Twitter which enables developers to embed advertisements into tweet streams in third-party apps on Android and iOS which utilise Twitter Kit.

Why the sun may still shine on TV for boosting your app

(c)iStock.com/RyanJLane

With over two million apps on both the App Store and Google Play, it has never been harder to acquire new users. Unless you are a big developer, cutting through the noise is increasingly difficult. Added to the number of apps, expectations with apps and mobile games are increasingly high, with people expecting better experiences and more innovation, often for free.

In many ways, creating an app is the easy part. Getting people to find out about it, download and then come back is where...

Google debuts new universal app campaigns and performance reports

The app industry is a huge and growing business which offers a lot of potential, but also a lot of competition. Making the most amazing piece of software won't make a difference to anyone if the app just gets lost in the depths of the vast app stores and never has a chance to gain the userbase it deserves.

Google has debuted new tools - first announced back in May at Google I/O - for creating powerful new...

Monetisation’s bright future: What app developers need to know now

(c)iStock.com/miki1991

Just a few years ago, if you’d asked the average app developer to share their thoughts on ad monetisation, chances are they would have had a number of reservations. The concern that ads would negatively impact the user experience – and along with it, adversely affect retention and user ratings – was commonplace among freemium app developers.

Fast forward to today, and you’ll see that the mobile ad tech landscape has significantly evolved. Supply side technologies have become...

The zombie app escape strategy: How to get your users to drive downloads and use

(c)iStock.com/renphoto

Apart from stars like Uber, Angry Birds and Facebook most apps are destined to join the ranks of the ‘living dead’, languishing unfound and unloved among over a million competitors in the Apple Store and Google Play. Even those that make it to a smartphone are often forgotten and uninstalled after a few months. In other words, they will be zombies until you finally apply the mercy blow and remove them from the App Stores.

Here are a few stats:

Android developers can soon A/B test Play Store pages

Last week, Apple released their new App Store analytics tool (albeit in limited beta) which allows developers to take a deep-dive into useful insights such as how many times your App Store page has been opened. New information suggests Google has a trick up its sleeve on how to help developers perform better in their Play Store...

Apple begins analytics roll-out for App Store

Back at WWDC, Apple promised a new analytics app which can monitor your apps performance in the App Store to help provide deeper insights about what is working and what could do with taking a second-look at what elements can be improved for better success.

Some developers have received emails alerting them to the launch of the 'App Analytics Beta' app which fulfils Apple's promise. It shows how many (potential) customers have opened an app's listing in the store, check in-app purchase sales, create...

Google unleashes new features for Android game developers

If you’re an Android game developer, you’ve been given some new features to play with. The latest additions help you to analyse what’s successful and what’s not, monetise, and deliver a 'second screen' gaming experience which helps to make playing Android games with friends a lot more social.

First up is player analytics, to help understand your players behaviour in a similar way to how analytics tools allow you to see what is working and what isn’t in your application. The new...

What issues does a Trusted Execution Environment address?

The richness of today’s connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes and televisions is bringing new challenges to service providers wanting to protect their offering against hackers and malware attacks. At the same time, an increasing number of applications are hosting sensitive, personal and confidential information that could have significant consequences if compromised. Such applications require more protection than can be offered by software solutions alone. This is where the...

Apple shoves its own Push notification rule

In Apple's App Store rules, it quite clearly states "Apps cannot use Push Notifications to send advertising, promotions, or direct marketing of any kind". If you've spent any time on iOS (or any major smartphone platform for that matter) you know that rule is broken all-too-often to the frustration of many customers.

Apple needs to enforce the rule somehow and at least set a good standard for developers to follow everywhere.

It's an effective tactic, however, with...

Today, Google has announced the ability for Chinese developers to launch both their free and paid apps to more than 130 other countries who have access to the Play Store. The only caveat is that, although merchant support has launched, citizens are still unable to access it themselves.

If you develop Android apps in China, and want to start distributing your apps to a global audience through Google Play, visit

Taxi service Uber has launched its long-rumoured API to integrate its real-world services into third party apps. Google Play overshadows App Store downloads by 60%

App Annie, an industry standard in analytics and market data in the apps and digital economy, has released their Q2 report which highlights the performance of nearly three million apps across all the major app stores for the iOS, Android, and Windows Phone platforms. It covers an interesting period due to the "Summer of Sport" which featured the World Cup in Brazil.

Optimising user experience with in-app analytics

The mobile landscape has reshaped the way people buy, sell, learn, reserve, and watch. Mobile has taken user experience to the next level and inspired consumers to become more engaged with brands. But why is it that mobile app developers are obsessed about app downloads or app revenue. While the number game is important, it is not the only thing one should be tracking. Developers need to be equally curious to learn what kind of audience uses your app and how, when, where your app is used.

In-app analytics is...

Report shows in-app purchases to be most lucrative

Have you noticed the rise in applications making use of in-app purchases? A new report from VentureBeat Intel shows these developers have good reason to implement them; after all, they are by far the most lucrative method of monetisation.

The report collates data taken from 176 various developers across 1,000 different games to get a clear idea of how others can profit from their works.

It takes into account the cost-effectiveness of implementing the various methods...
