What Google Play Means for App-Makers
If you have an Android Phone, you may have noticed that your Android Market icon disappeared, and now you suddenly have all this weird stuff on your phone. Welcome to Google Play.
The Google Play rebranding is baffling tech-bloggers including Phandroid. Some are happy with the change. Others aren’t so excited by it. They say that it doesn’t look like a place where you can get productivity needs. Market implies that you can get everything, while play implies just games.
The main result is that now we all know that you can use books, music, and movies with synchronization across your devices. To be clear, these features were available before, but Google Play will bring these features to the fore.
One thing that app makers should be aware of is the emphasis on play. Productivity apps are still a necessity, but it seems like Google is going to be highlighting entertainment apps over productivity apps.

- Music
- Television
- Videos
- Games
- E-Books
While the Google Play concept is too new for real statistics at this point, it seems like now is a good time to move focus to apps that ‘play.’
